I’ve shared a few accounts before on La Union food, but during my last trip I was able to try some new dishes so I’m making an updated post for it here. I love to eat while I’m there, but while I indulge myself with my LU staples, I also try to explore new places and dishes in the area.
Flotsam and Jetsam’s Grilled Dorado Fish
It was my first time to try this dish in Flotsam and I was so happy I opted for the fish instead of my usual meat. The Dorado or Mahi-Mahi might look small, but it actually got me full and I didn’t have to order pica pica after (which was my initial plan thinking this wasn’t going to be enough). The fish was grilled right and was very tasty, and a side sauce, which added extra flavour to it, accompanied it. I’m just wondering if I was supposed to get fries with it or if they really took it out since other Dorado meals I’ve seen in Flotsam have fries.
Elunion Grilled Cheese with Bacon Paste + Dirty White
For merienda one of my friends recommended Elunion’s Grilled Cheese sandwich so Anton and I went to try it out. Just watching them make it, I already knew it was going to be delicious because of the mountain of assorted cheese they put in it. You have the option to add Bacon Paste on the side, which I recommend you do, because it adds a little sweetness to the sandwich.
Halo-Halo De Iloco
This place is pretty known in LU for its Halo-Halo so it’s a go-to for everyone that visits La Union. I’ve had their Fiesta Halo-Halo twice and I loved it both times because it really is so delicious and filled with generous amounts of laman. They also put yema in it, which I really like.
I have no photos of our meal that night because we were all so hungry and eager to try this famous eatery the surfers go to for their after surf binge. It’s a small canteen along the main road of La Union and can be spotted by searching for the racks of turning chicken at the front of the canteen. It’s a relatively small place, much like the karinderyas you see in Manila. We took it to one of our LU regulars to do the ordering and we feasted on whatever plate was served. All thirteen of us devoured the liempo and chicken, and in less than ten minutes in, a few of the boys were already asking for a second round of rice. We absolutely loved the food there and were so stuffed after the meal. The most incredible thing about it? We only paid Php 150 per head for the meal.
